Eduardo's ancestry runs through two Zacatecas branches that lived within a day's ride of each other in the sierra along the Jalisco border. His grandfather's people — the Castañeda / Ortiz line — came from the tiny ranchos of García de la Cadena (La Estanzuela, La Ceja, La Tetilla). His grandmother's people — the Robles / Nungaray line — came from the old mining town of El Teúl de González Ortega, where the record trail now reaches the 1760s and includes a documented migration from the silver boomtown of Bolaños, Jalisco.
Grandmother María's side is verified by primary records through six generations (to ancestors born in the 1820s), with an evidenced trail two generations beyond (to ancestors born ~1730–1770). Grandfather Roque's side is documented to his parents' generation, with the key link — which Victoriano Castañeda — narrowed to a prime candidate awaiting one record.
The same tiny village holds a richly documented Castañeda family that is very likely the same clan, though the connecting generation is unproven: Gregorio Castañeda (~1819/29 – d. 23 Jun 1875, La Estanzuela, "industrial") × María Luciana Bernabé Sandoval (1830–1909). Their children (all record-corroborated, surnamed Castañeda Sandoval): Simón (1863–1951, m. María Ylaria Arellano Figueroa — note the Arellano), Domingo, Tomás, Irineo, María de la Paz, Encarnación. Gregorio's own parents remain unknown; his 1875 death act (read in full) does not name them. Candidate baptisms exist in Atolinga (1831, parents Ignacio Castañeda + Gerónima de Aro) and Tepechitlán (1819, parents Cesáreo Castañeda + Eleuteria Rodrigues).
Grandmother Juanita (Juana Nungaray) told Irma there were Gypsies (Gitanos) in her family. This is family tradition, not yet tied to any record. If it holds, it would most plausibly appear on the Nungaray/Velázquez side of El Teúl; Romani ancestry in Mexico traces to Spanish gitano migration and is difficult to document in parish books (which rarely labeled it), so this is best pursued through autosomal DNA (ethnicity estimates and matches) rather than paper records.
